Wireless Africa is about researching ways and means to develop sustainable information and communications technology in developing countries. The focus is to address the challenges of closing the digital divide that exists within and between developing countries.

We are committed to increasing the effectiveness of NGOs around the world who recognize that the more than 5 billion mobile phones provide unprecedented opportunities for organizing, communications, and service and information delivery.

We work together to create the resources NGOs need to effectively use mobile phones in their work: locally relevant content and services, support and learning opportunities, and networks that help MobileActives connect to each other. With these things on hand, tens of thousands of NGOs will be in a better position to enrich and serve their communities.

mWomen
Empowering Women Through Mobile Technology
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announces the launch of mWomen (video link).

mWomen is about bringing together women and mobile technology to advance gender equality and global development, and as a result of that marriage, a better world for all of us.

The Cherie Blair Foundation and GSMA Development Fund 
published a groundbreaking report in February 2010, quantifying the gender gap in mobile technology across developing countries - Women & Mobile: A Global Opportunity. The report shows that, by extending the benefits of mobile phone ownership to more women, a host of social and economic goals can be advanced, but 300 million women are missing out on the mobile revolution. Download the full report (5.4MB)
